Honestly those parts mostly involved creepy crawlies. There were parts of Fire & Flood that had me shaking with disgust. The book is all about competing in this race across different ecosystems. All of the animals have different abilities and I loved slowly having them revealed! So that was by far my favourite part of the story. And Fire & Flood totally had a Pokémon vibe. I just love it! It always makes me want to disappear into that universe and get an animal companion of my own. I’ve always been a crazy fan of things like The Wild Thornberries, Pokémon, and The Golden Compass-TV shows, movies, and books that have some kind of animal companion or “talking to animals” aspect. I loooooved Fire & Flood! Honestly, the main thing that pulled me into this book was the “animal companion” aspect. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place? The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying-and she's helpless to change anything. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air.
